How Dieting Has Killed Your Metabolism Link

A bit of background Link
A bit of background

The average woman spends 31 years of her life dieting. That's literally half your adult life. By “dieting”, that means changing the way you would naturally eat in order to lose weight. You’d think men would diet much less, but they don’t. The average man diets for 29 years of his life.

If you're aged between 45 and 64, then you're likely the most committed. By the age of 60, you might be on your 61st diet by now! But each diet lasts just five and a half weeks!

Dieting is boring and depressing Link
Dieting is boring and depressing

Normally, this means saying no to all the foods you really want. Bread. Steak. Butter. Cheese. Bacon.

Now you have to eat boring stuff. Salads. Turkey breast. Fake sugar.

Dieting is boring and depressing

Maybe you’re even counting calories. Deliberating over every gram of food. Maybe you’re tracking every step. Counting every calorie. Turning life into an equation (albeit a flawed one).

But you’re eating so little that you just walk around depressed, cranky and starving all day. I know. It sucks!

...and it clearly doesn't work. Link
...and it clearly doesn't work.

But if dieting worked, why would you need to be on a diet half of your adult life?

Clearly the weight isn’t staying off. Sure you lost 1 kg two months ago cutting out bread. But now you weigh more than before. Is that success?

This is happening to everyone! It means only one thing:

Dieting doesn't work!

Dieting damages the body Link
Dieting damages the body

I am going to show you how to achieve your dream body. But I won’t try to sell you another diet.

In fact, you definitely don’t need another diet. Every time you fail at a diet, it harms your body. It slows down your metabolism!

After reducing your calories for a certain amount of time, the body adapts. But not in a good way.

While you lose weight at the start, the body thinks you are starving it.

It makes you hungrier.

It makes you get full slower.

It makes you crave high-calorie foods.

It makes your metabolism work slower.

It makes it harder and harder for you to lose weight. [1]

As you get older, after years of failed diets, the body makes it nearly impossible to lose weight!

Why is my body doing this to me? Link
Why is my body doing this to me?

The body tries its hardest to keep everything the same. It’s called homeostasis.

As you reduce your calories, your body gets worried. It doesn’t know when you’re going to get your next proper meal. It holds onto the fat you already have.

And then it adapts to make sure that it holds onto it better next time. It slows your metabolism down!

You're probably broken by now! Link
You're probably broken by now!

After years of dieting, your body is broken. Your hunger is high. Every diet you try now is going to fail.

You’re never going to be able to stick to a diet. All diets have something in common: They only work if you stick to them.

But for anything to work now, you need to fix your metabolism! You need to remember how to burn fat!

Is this you? Link
Is this you?

A new hope Link
A new hope

After a new wave of motivation to lose weight, you start a new diet. The success comes early, 1 kg in the first week! The next week, also 1 kg lost on the scales. You’ve basically been eating salads and never going out to eat, having a glass of wine or socialising with friends.

Progress slows Link

But now, week three, you stand on the scales again. Same weight as last week. Hmm. But you’ve been doing all the same things as before, maybe you just went out to eat the once this week because it was your friends birthday. But no weight loss at all?

The wheels fall off Link
The wheels fall off

Week 4 comes and that wave of motivation is now completely gone. You’re fed up of the same old boring salads all over again. You’re always hungry and dissatisfied after every empty meal. It’s Easter so there is chocolate everywhere. You indulge.

The scales don’t treat you nicely this week. Up a kilo. Forget it.

Normal habits resume. The scales are depressing now so you don’t weigh yourself. You forget about dieting completely and resume your normal life.

Weighing more than before Link
Weighing more than before

But in the background, you’re actually just a little more hungry than before your diet. Your body has made long-term adjustments so that you don’t lose that weight again.

If you were to weigh yourself come week 6 or 7, you’d be around 0.5 kg heavier than before the diet.

Diets are marketed at you all the time, funded by banana and blueberry growers to the cheese and dairy industry. If you’ve got a bit of extra motivation to lose weight, one of them might tickle your fancy. You might start a new one three times a year. That’s 1.5 kg of weight gain.

And if that happens every time? You gain weight each year.

I’ve said it already and I’ll say it again. Stop living in denial.

Diet’s don’t work!

OK, so I have damaged my body after years of failed diets. How do I fix it? Link
OK, so I have damaged my body after years of failed diets. How do I fix it?

You need to encourage your fat metabolism. You need to get it working again! Your body burns fat at its best in the absence of glucose and insulin.

It’s really a two-pronged approach.

  1. Realising that what you eat is as important as when you eat (Chapter 5)
  2. Changing how you view “what you eat”. (Chapter 6)
